Meshtastic is a versatile open-source project that offers firmware for devices equipped with a LoRaWAN radio. In addition, it provides a Python command-line interface (CLI) for seamless communication and configuration with these devices, as well as a mobile app for both Android and Apple. When it comes to hardware options, most users choose either ESP32 or NRF boards, such as the popular Raspberry Pi Pico.
With its extensive capabilities and user-friendly features, Meshtastic empowers users to easily connect, communicate, and configure their devices, making it an excellent choice for those seeking a reliable and open-source solution for their LoRaWAN radio devices.

Heltec V3
Inexpensive basic ESP32-based boards.
This is a good entry level device as it is low cost and can be paired with a small battery Pack. If you have a 3D printer Thingiverse has a great case option my recommendation is to order the battery from Ali express and also take a razor blade to the Reset button and make it flush.

Raspberry Pi Pico and SX1262
Fast versatile boards using the RP2040. (Does require an additional SX162x Radio).
Currently the WiFi and Bluetooth are not used on this device so you can save some money and forego the Pico W.

RAK WisBlock
Modular hardware system with Base, Core and Peripheral modules including the low-power and solar ready nRF52840-based Meshtastic Starter Kit (19007 & 4631).

T-Beam
Boards complete with GPS, 18650 battery holder, and optional screen.
The T-Beam has a few models including v0.7, v1.1, M8N & SX1262, S3-Core, and Supreme. The v0.7 is outdated and worth avoiding at this stage but the v1.1 is a solid choice and has a GPS Radio built in.

T-Echo
All-in-one unit with E-Ink screen, GPS, battery, and an injection-molded case. Features the low-power nRF52840 for long battery life.

T-Deck
Standalone device with screen and keyboard. This is a great device if you don't want to be connected via Bluetooth.

Some other things to help you decide.
The RAK is a good choice if you are looking for a ready to go Solar builds.

Raspberry Pico is easy to flash with it's drag and drop the prebuilt .UF2 file.

T-Beam and T-Echo are prebuilt ready to go devices with GPS.

Heltec is an excellent choice if you want something compact and ESP32 based, ESP32 opens up a few exclusive features such as Store & Forward which allows you to request Messages you may have missed while away, The T-Beam is also an ESP32 device.

Whatever you decide to use I hope this little guide was Helpful and I will expand on Meshtastic again in the future with the different add-ons you can get to make your Meshtastic device more than just a texting device.
