After spending 2+ months or more with Obsidian, I have really started to enjoy using it, especially now that I have begun studying for the CompTIA Sec+ Certification. Being able to take notes using Markdown and generate a quick table of contents just from creating a Header/Sub Header or Linking notes together based on Topics has made it a lot easier for me to search through and find what I am looking for quickly.

My current workflow is to create a general note with just a Title to my Topic/Theme, then make a numbered list where I add each individual note that is related by using the [[TAG]] feature. This helps me keep all my topics together, allowing me to view things in clusters using the Grid View and quickly find what I am looking for.

Features, Features, and More Features..... Markdown is something I hadn't heard too much about and I had never used it, my only real interaction with it was through GitHub README files. Once I dived in and started to play with it though, my note-taking changed for the better. I have improved both my organization and presentation, making them easier to find, read, and understand. The ability to drop code or commands into "Code Blocks" makes them look Neat and Tidy, but you can also specify what type of code it is and get some basic Syntax highlighting. While working through some of the lessons, I was able to take advantage of Mermaid Graphs and recreate Flowcharts with minimal effort. HELL, you can even make a canvas and reference multiple files, spread them out, resize them, add photos and even create flow arrows to show a path/order to your madness.

The Final thing I will mention is that Obsidian Sync is worth it. The app is free to download and use, and you can set up Google Drive, Dropbox, One Drive, or one of the many other Cloud storage options and set your Vault up in the cloud, but I opted to use the built-in, no-hassle standard sync option. For $48 a Year you get 1 vault with 1GB of storage, but I don't see myself going over that any time soon, and you're supporting a great app that you will most likely use daily. That makes it worth it in my books.

Sync Standard Plan

  • 1 vault

  • 1 GB total storage

  • 5 MB max file size

  • 1 month history

  • Unlimited devices

  • Shared vaults
